About
Our Mahi
Our Mission
We’re rethinking what concrete is made from by exploring innovative materials, such as marine byproducts, to develop lower-carbon, durable alternatives that reduce reliance on finite resources. Beyond the material itself, we’re committed to supporting local kelp forest restoration initiatives, contributing positively to natural systems.
Our Vision
We envision a world where concrete is reimagined, lowering the environmental impact of construction and helping industry move into greater balance with the natural world.
Our Story
Concrete has shaped human progress for millennia. It is the most widely used human-made material on Earth, second only to water in overall consumption, and it defines much of our built environment. However, its environmental cost can no longer be overlooked. Today, concrete production accounts for 5–8% of global carbon emissions, consumes vast amounts of finite resources, and damages ecosystems. Its use is so extensive that the total mass of concrete is projected to surpass the total weight of Earth’s biomass around 2040. Without change, concrete will continue to drive climate change and biodiversity loss.
Acutely aware of this problem, our co-founders Enrique Del Rey Castillo, a structural engineer and researcher in sustainable concrete, and Alex Radley, a materials and chemical engineer and entrepreneur, joined forces to rethink our approach to concrete.
Alongside KelpHelpers, which has a charitable mission to restore Aotearoa’s marine ecosystems, we set out to develop more sustainable concrete mixes using materials such as abundant marine byproducts and waste resources.
Changing the construction industry is a complex challenge. However, we believe it’s also one of the greatest opportunities: to redefine the materials we rely on and contribute to a regenerative future.
